It was expected for many decades, predicted by non-idiot writers, observed in different countries and several states in US... and now it's vocalized in NYT.
An open suggestion that mathematics and other useless stuff is removed from school program.
In New-York Times, no less.

According to the National Science Foundation: Among 15-year-olds worldwide, "in 2009, U.S. students demonstrated higher mathematical literacy than students in only 5 out of 34 OECD countries (Greece, Israel, Turkey, Chile, and Mexico).

Взяли какой-то опрос, неясно - ни в каком секторе населения, ни какая выборка, ни что и как проверяли.
